New push to curb alcohol ads in sport

Australia’s biggest sporting codes and commercial broadcasters this year face a public health campaign to close a loophole allowing alcohol advertisements to be screened in children’s viewing hours.

Curtin University professor of health policy Mike Daube said children were being “massively exposed” to alcohol promotions through broadcasts of cricket, AFL and the rugby codes, which are sponsored by breweries.

“We see this as a priority,” said Professor Daube, who is also the co-chair of the National Alliance for Action on Alcohol.
