Newman confident Queensland will lead the way with Safe Night strategy

Premier Campbell Newman said he was “very confident” that the other states will soon be looking to the “Queensland model” to address their alcohol and drug fuelled violence problems, saying he didn’t believe other jurisdictions went far enough in addressing the issue.

The Safe Night Out strategy was passed overnight. Labor opposed the LNP plan, having put forward its own policy, which involved curfews and last drinks. LNP MPs, favouring the line “not punishing the many for the sins of the few” in their responses, passionately advocated the education, venue, legislative and policing response the government had put forward.

In the end, given the government’s numbers, it was a moot point.
