Mayors call for Abbott to reform alcohol tax

The nation’s capital city mayors have asked Prime Minister Tony Abbott to reform alcohol taxation, saying young men “preloading” on cheap wine before hitting city nightspots were behind much booze-fuelled violence.

In meetings with politicians including the Prime Minister on Thursday, Lord Mayors urged the government to adopt recommendations from the 2009 tax review led by former Treasury secretary Ken Henry, for alcoholic drinks to be taxed according to their alcohol content.
