Hundreds of millions of litres of alcohol are swallowed in Australia each year but the NSW government has no idea how much is consumed in its own backyard.
As state cabinet prepares to announce its policy response to weeks of heightened concern over alcohol-related violence, the government is being urged to force the liquor industry to hand over its sales data.
Leading alcohol researcher Professor Tanya Chikritzhs, from the National Drug Research Institute, said collection of sales data was key to monitoring whether alcohol-related policies were working.
